If you are wondering why we recommend you drink plenty of water whilst fasting, here it is:
- It’s good for us! Keeping well hydrated keeps your kidney in good working order, helps your heart maintain a healthy rhythm and keeps our skin toned.
- We normally get some hydration from the food we eat, so when fasting, it’s important to remember to drink more water to avoid dehydration.
- Water can help suppress hunger by taking up space in the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness.
- Water can be used as a first response to cravings. In many cases when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually thirsty instead.
- Keeping hydrated during your fast period can help to keep those initial headaches at bay.
For more flavour without the added sugar, you could add some of the following to your cup or water bottle:
- A slice of lemon or cucumber
- A few blueberries or raspberries
- A sprig of mint
Are you a big fan of tea or coffee?
Remember, in your fasting window, you can drink black tea, black coffee, caffeinated or non caffeinated teas, and sparkling water (without sweeteners, of course). You may also want to try unsweetened hot or cold herbal teas such as peppermint, chamomile, lemon, ginger and rooibos.
If you have a tendency to high blood pressure, keep a check on the amount of caffeine you are having, and opt for water or herbal tea instead after 12pm.
